After initially being reported by the ever-reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, both the Premier League and Everton have now confirmed that they will have their points deduction reduced from ten to six points this weekend.
The Premier League gave The Toffees the ten-point penalty in mid-November, as a punishment for breaching the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
That deduction has meant that rather than sitting in the middle-of-the-table, they have been swapping with Luton Town in and out of the bottom three and the relegation places.
The return of four points to their tally takes them to 25 and means they now sit 15th in the table, above Brentford on goal difference, and five clear of Luton in 18th.
Everton’s next match is at home to West Ham United on Saturday and the Goodison Park crowd will he hopeful of roaring them onto victory as Sean Dyche’s men are in poor form. Their 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend means they have won just one of their last 13 matches across all competitions.
There is an expectation that Everton’s fellow relegation rivals, Nottingham Forest, are set to be handed a points penalty, too, in the coming weeks or months.
