Numbers continue to dwindle for Southgate

% of Englishmen in the PL

Gareth Southgate has often complained about a lack of English players regularly starting in the Premier League and he has discussed the fact the pool of players he has to choose from has dwindled.

With UEFA EURO 2024 just around the corner and the fact that Southgate is rumoured to be in his final tournament in charge of the England national team, the pressure is very much on the Three Lions.

The numbers have been down this year, too, with a slight flickering up over the winter period now coming back down again as we head into the run in.

After the most recent match day concluded last night with Chelsea hammering Everton by six goals to nil, this is a look at which clubs started the most Englishmen in the Premier League over the weekend…

WEEK 33 | 59 (26.82%)

Two clubs used seven Englishmen from the start at the weekend, albeit one of those, Michael Olise of Crystal Palace, is actually a France U21 international but just about still eligible for the England national team.

Of the so-called ‘big six’, both Chelsea and Manchester United fielded four apiece in their matches, whilst Arsenal named three with Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all selecting just one each.

Quite remarkably, Burnley, who also fielded a team whereby the lowest kit number was 16, were one of two sides, alongside Brentford, who did not start a single Englishman at the weekend.

As an English football fan, it's disheartening to see the pool of players available for Southgate dwindling. With EURO 2024 fast approaching and Southgate rumored to be on his way out, the pressure is on for the Three Lions. But with numbers down and only 26. 6% of players starting for their clubs being English, it's clear that something needs to change.

As a football fan, it's concerning to see Gareth Southgate express his dissatisfaction with the lack of English players starting in the Premier League. With EURO 2024 approaching and Southgate's potential departure, the pressure is on for the Three Lions. This season's numbers have been down, and even after a brief increase, they are now dwindling again. It's disappointing to see that only 26. 6% of players in the Premier League over the weekend were English.

As a football fan, I am disappointed to hear that there is a lack of English players starting in the Premier League. It is worrying to think that our national team's pool of players is shrinking and this could have a negative impact on our performance in upcoming tournaments like EURO 2024. The pressure is definitely on for Gareth Southgate and the Three Lions. It's concerning to see the numbers continue to decrease, especially after a slight increase during the winter period. Let's hope more

As a football fan, I can understand Southgate's frustration with the lack of English players starting in the Premier League. It's worrying to see the pool of players dwindling, especially with EURO 2024 approaching and Southgate's tenure possibly coming to an end. The numbers have been down this year, with only 26. 5% of players starting in the last match day being English. Let's hope for a turnaround as we head into the final stretch of the season.
