Gareth Southgate has often complained about a lack of English players regularly starting in the Premier League and he has discussed the fact the pool of players he has to choose from has dwindled.
With UEFA EURO 2024 just around the corner and the fact that Southgate is rumoured to be in his final tournament in charge of the England national team, the pressure is very much on the Three Lions.
The numbers have been down this year, too, with a slight flickering up over the winter period now coming back down again as we head into the run in.
After the most recent match day concluded last night with Chelsea hammering Everton by six goals to nil, this is a look at which clubs started the most Englishmen in the Premier League over the weekend…
Two clubs used seven Englishmen from the start at the weekend, albeit one of those, Michael Olise of Crystal Palace, is actually a France U21 international but just about still eligible for the England national team.
Of the so-called ‘big six’, both Chelsea and Manchester United fielded four apiece in their matches, whilst Arsenal named three with Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all selecting just one each.
Quite remarkably, Burnley, who also fielded a team whereby the lowest kit number was 16, were one of two sides, alongside Brentford, who did not start a single Englishman at the weekend.
7 = Crystal Palace (Nathaniel Clyne, Eberechi Eze, Dean Henderson, Will Hughes, Tyrick Mitchell, Michael Olise*, Adam Wharton) / Luton Town (Ross Barkley, Luke Berry, Reece Burke, Jordan Clark, Alfie Doughty, Carlton Morris, Andros Townsend)
6 = Everton (Jarrad Branthwaite, James Garner, Dwight McNeil, Jordan Pickford, James Tarkowski, Ashley Young) / Newcastle United (Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff, Jacob Murphy)
4 = Chelsea (Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke) / Manchester United (Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka) / Sheffield United (Oliver Arblaster, Jayden Bogle, Mason Holgate, Ben Osborn)
3 = AFC Bournemouth (Lewis Cook, Adam Smith, Dominic Solanke) / Arsenal (Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Ben White) / Aston Villa (Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins) / Nottingham Forest (Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ryan Yates)
2 = Brighton and Hove Albion (Lewis Dunk, Danny Welbeck) / West Ham United (Danny Ings, James Ward-Prowse) / Wolverhampton Wanderers (Tommy Doyle, Max Kilman)
1 = Fulham (Tosin Adarabioyo) / Liverpool (Curtis Jones) / Manchester City (Rico Lewis) / Tottenham Hotspur (James Maddison)
0 = Brentford / Burnley
