Martyn Waghorn scored a first-half hat-trick as Derby County won 4-2 away to Peterborough United.
In a game between two sides hoping to push for at least the play-off places, the Rams emerged victorious. Peterborough had opened the scoring in front of their own fans before Derby fought back – going 4-1 up before half-time thanks to Waghorn’s triple and another from Eiran Cashin. Kwame Poku reduced the deficit to 4-2 late in the game.
That’s five goals in five games for Waghorn now – a fine start to life at Derby County.
The Rams are three points off the top despite that result though. Oxford United currently occupy first place following their win at home to Charlton Athletic with Tyler Goodrham scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.
Exeter City moved up to second after a 2-1 win at home to Reading. Will Aimson had given Gary Caldwell’s side the lead with Harvey Knibbs equalising for the Royals just before half-time. The game looked like it might be heading for a draw until substitute Reece Cole found a winner in stoppage time.
The Grecians took second place at the expense of Bolton Wanderers. The Trotters had a horrible time last week against Wigan Athletic and this Saturday had to settle for a point on the road against Burton Albion with Dion Charles scoring the equaliser.
Blackpool were one of two undefeated teams going into this round but that record is over after their trip to the LNER Stadium. Lincoln City won 3-0 with goals coming from Daniel Mandroiu, Ethan Erhahon, and Teddy Bishop. The Tangerines weren’t helped midway through the second half when Oliver Norburn was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in as many minutes.
That leaves Portsmouth as the only unbeaten side in League One. Pompey kept yet another clean sheet in their 0-0 draw away to fifth-placed Stevenage.
Elsewhere, Wigan Athletic may have gotten themselves out of negative points with last week’s big derby win but they came back down to earth when Charlie Hughes was given a red card just 21 minutes into their match at home to Barnsley. The Tykes took full advantage and finished 2-0 winners with another goal from Devante Goal and one on John McAtee’s Barnsley debut.
