According to reports in Germany, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is set to be left out of Die Mannschaft’s 26-man squad for UEFA EURO 2024 this summer.
Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly took the decision to omit the 35-year-old 2014 FIFA World Cup winner despite Hummels’ excellent performances for Dortmund en route to the UEFA Champions League final where they will play Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium in a few weeks.
Hummels has been capped 78 times by the German national team after making his debut in 2010. He began his career with Bayern Munich before moving to Dortmund in 2009 and spending seven years with the Black and Yellows but rejoined Bayern for three trophy-laden seasons in the mid-2010s. He returned to Dortmund in 2019 and his reignited his career in the last six months or so.
It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that the Germans will instead call up Hummels’ Dortmund teammate Nico Schlotterbeck, as well as Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga winning centre-back Jonathan Tah.
Schlotterbeck joined Dortmund for a hefty fee from Freiburg in the summer of 2022 and has had up and down spells with the club. Tah, on the other hand, was always viewed as a prospect with unfulfilled potential until this season with the coaching of Xabi Alonso.
Germany’s full squad is expected to be revealed on Thursday with the hosts getting UEFA EURO 2024 underway on Friday 14th June against Scotland in Munich before facing Hungary and Switzerland in Group A.
