EFL round-up: Ipswich go top in Championship

A packed Tuesday night of EFL football saw a host of frontrunners maintain their impressive form so far this season.

This whirlwind round-up highlights an entertaining clash from each division in 'The 72' on Tuesday night.

      Championship

In the Championship, Kieran McKenna's Ipswich continue to go from strength to strength: the Tractor Boys sweeping aside Hull at home to move top of the pile in the second tier.

There was no looking back for the hosts after Wes Burns gave them a fifth minute lead and Ipswich were two goals to the good at half-time when Conor Chaplin notched his fourth goal of the season.

Just after the hour mark, Marcus Harness put the game completely out of the reach of visiting Hull, who kissed goodbye to their eight-game unbeaten record going into the contest.

      Championship results

      Birmingham City 4-1 Huddersfield Town
      Middlesbrough 2-0 Cardiff City
      Ipswich Town 3-0 Hull City
      Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Millwall
      Stoke City 0-1 Southampton
      West Bromwich 1-0 Sheffield Wed.

      League One

Portsmouth remain at the summit of League One, although it wasn't all smooth sailing against Wycombe Wanderers.

John Mourinho's Pompey are the only team yet to lose a game in the third tier this season, but the visitors threatened to blot the league leaders' copybook when Josh Scowen put the Chairboys in front on 22 minutes.

A goal down at the break, Portsmouth levelled through striker Colby Bishop on 58 minutes and the spoils seemed all set to be shared until some late, late drama thrilled Fratton Park.

With 98 minutes on the clock, Jack Sparkes set up Conor Shaughnessy for a match winning goal that kept the south coast club top of the pile in League One.

One unbeaten league run that did not survive the night was Swindon Town's - the Robins turned over by table-topping Notts County.

The Magpies sit three points clear at the summit after a 3-1 victory that saw big summer signing David McGoldrick get the ball rolling with a goal in the 10th minute.

The prolific Macaulay Langstaff scored a penalty on 35 minutes to extend their lead, and just two minutes later former Arsenal academy product Dan Crowley added a third to effectively kill the contest.

Tyrese Shade netted soon after the break to throw Swindon a lifeline, but they were unable to reduce the deficit further and sit in sixth after the defeat.
