Manchester United secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, thanks to goals from Antony and Diogo Dalot and took advantage of slip-ups by Newcastle and Tottenham Newcastle and Tottenham to gain ground in the race for the top positions.
The visitors started strong and came close to taking the lead within the first minute of the game, as Jadon Sancho pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area. Although Sancho's shot beat goalkeeper Keylor Navas, it was blocked by Forest defender Felipe.
The rest of the opening half-hour was a tightly contested affair, with Forest looking dangerous from set pieces and Erik ten Hag's men creating opportunities from open play.
But eventually, it was United who broke the deadlock, as Anthony Martial seized the ball from Danilo in the final third and played a one-two with Bruno Fernandes before seeing his shot saved by Navas. However, Antony was on hand to slot home the rebound from close range.
Forest continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, but their best chance of the first half fell to Taiwo Awoniyi, who couldn't keep his shot on target.
The Red Devils started the second half brightly, with Fernandes and Martial both coming close to extending their lead. The Portuguese saw a powerful shot tipped onto the crossbar by Navas, while the Frenchmanl missed a good chance as he was unable to keep his header on target
The visitors managed to double their advantage in the 76th minute, as Diogo Dalot finished off a tremendous through ball from Antony with a cool side-footed finish past Navas.
Manchester United now sit in third place in the table, three points ahead of fourth-placed Newcastle and six points ahead of Tottenham, who have played one more game. In contrast, Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest find themselves in the relegation zone, level on points with 17th-placed Everton.
Nex up, United will turn their focus to the Europa League, with a crucial quarter-final second leg against Sevilla on Thursday. The tie is evenly poised at 2-2, making for an exciting encounter. In addition, the Red Devils have an FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion coming up next Sunday, a crucial moment in their season.
Meanwhile, Forest face a tough task ahead of them as they look to avoid relegation. They have a challenging Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday.
