Jack Marriott stepped off the bench to inspire Derby County to play-off victory against Leeds last night - as the Rams once again showed their penchant for a comeback.
A goal down to Marcelo Bielsa's side from the first leg at Pride Park, Derby found themselves further adrift when Stuart Dallas scored for the hosts at Elland Road. Rams boss Frank Lampard threw substitute Marriott into the action, for Duane Holmes, and was soon rewarded for such an attacking change: Marriott capitalising on a defensive mix-up to grab a goal back on the stroke of half-time.
A Mason Mount strike soon after the interval put Derby level on aggregate before Harry Wilson put the Rams in the driving seat from the penalty spot. Dallas netted his second of the evening to throw Leeds a lifeline, but the dismissal of United defender Gaetano Berardi handed Derby the advantage heading into the latter stages of a pulsating clash. Step forward Marriott, who finished clinically, after great work from Wilson, to make the score 4-2 to book the Rams' spot in the Championship play-off final against Aston Villa on 27 May.
Derby have now come from behind to win Championship games on seven occasions this season - no second tier team has recorded more.
However, the Rams' play-off final opponents Villa have shown a similar ability to drag themselves back from the brink - their first leg victory against West Brom (who they eventually squeezed past on penalties) a classic case in point.
