Manchester United fought back from two goals down to secure a point but their Premier League struggles continued with a 2-2 draw at Southampton.
Stuart Armstrong and Cedric Soares gave the hosts a shock two-goal lead inside 20 minutes, but Lukaku and Ander Herrera hit back before half-time. The Red Devils offered little in attack in the second half, and Saints held on for a much-needed point.
This draw could prove to be a valuable point to move up to 18th in the league and ease the pressure on manager Mark Hughes, while a point takes United - who are without a win in three Premier League games for the first time since December 2017 - up to seventh.
Mark Hughes: “I suppose given we had gone into a 2-0 lead it was a little bit amiss of us to allow that to be wiped away, especially in the first half, but overall we can’t be disappointed with the performance. We all feel we are playing better than we did last year and it’s a slow process and we can’t change overnight to be a top six club like this club has been in the past because we haven’t got that capability yet.”
Jose Mourinho: “Overall I’m not happy with the result, but I cannot be critical, I thought the spirit and desire was good. If they didn’t do better then it’s because they weren’t able to do it. The players don't understand that simplicity is genius. They keep going to complicated football.”
