Hammers defeat United

Hellish start for Red Devils

West Ham piled more pressure on Jose Mourinho with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Paul Pogba returned after his midweek spat with Mourinho, but it took just five minutes for things to unravel as record signing Felipe Anderson scored his first West Ham goal with a deft near-post flick.

When things were looking better for the away side, disaster struck. United failed to clear from a corner and Yarmolenko kept things alive. He got a shot away after shimmying to the left, but it deflected off Victor Lindelof to wrongfoot De Gea and loop into the top corner.

Rashford did reduce the arrears with a sublime flick from Luke Shaw’s 71st minute corner, immediately after Pogba and Martial had been subbed for Fred and Juan Mata. But any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Arnautovic slotted past De Gea after a brilliant through ball by Noble.

The drama at Old Trafford is rapidly turning into a crisis as United equalled their worst start to a Premier League season with just 10 points from their opening seven matches.

Manuel Pellegrini: “It was a very good game because I remember what I said three weeks ago when we were losing games, that we had to play as a big team and I think what we did today reflected that. Today we played as I like my team to play - as a big team trying to get to the other box. They scored just one goal from a corner, so it's a massive result and a massive performance.”

Jose Mourinho: “I left Alexis out, and I think Martial is not a player very focused on his defensive duties so to play him as second striker would be easier for him. Coming here and after five minutes we were losing 1-0, which is not the best way to start. The goal was offside and, last Tuesday with the VAR, it would not have been a goal. For myself, speaking of my own feelings, I am really happy that we have a game on Tuesday.”
