The 2023/24 campaign gets underway this weekend and the excitement, as ever, is ramping up with the EFL season set to begin on Friday evening as Southampton, of the Premier League last season, go to newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

There are 72 clubs with their own hopes and aspirations of creating some history over the next nine or so months and, as a result, we, at Playmaker Stats, are running through every club with a preview and a prediction... which you cannot hold us to!

BRISTOL CITY

Manager: Nigel Pearson

Last season: 14th in the Championship

Transfers: see here.

While the 2022/23 season was nothing spectacular for Bristol City, they are a side that are slowly improving both on and off the pitch under Nigel Pearson. The Robins were admittedly inconsistent but they also fielded a team with plenty of youth and pace.

One major success story has been Alex Scott who had another impressive season but it does unfortunately seem like the 19-year-old’s time at the club is close to an end with Wolverhampton Wanderers one of the Premier League clubs said to be interested in the player.

However, the likes of Sam Bell and Tommy Conway show that there are still lots of exciting prospects coming out of the club’s academy. It will be interesting to see if they can improve once again during the next campaign.

No doubt Pearson has a plan for how City will play without Scott and the club has already snapped up four players: Robert Dickie, Ross McCrorie, and Haydon Roberts are there to bolster the defence while Jason Knight arrives in midfield from Derby County.

It’s up to Pearson and his side to now move onto the next stage after consolidating midtable in the second tier and potentially push towards a play-off spot. The Robins had a few good runs through the season… if they could just keep those going a little longer it would make a huge difference.

Playmaker prediction: Upper mid-table
