Hungary impressed yet again in front of a packed out Puskas Arena, lifting the roof off the stadium as they took a point from the world champions France, leaving the competition’s group of death wide open.
France looked to up the tempo from their impressive opening win against Germany, with Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe both going close, but in first half stoppage time it was Hungary who took the impetus, to stunning effect.
Some slow French defending allowed Roland Sallai and Attila Fiola to exchange a clever one-two on the left-hand side, with the later driving at the opposition defence before finding himself in an unlikely position to finish, which he duly did.
Didier Deschamps changed things up with the introduction of Ousmane Dembele in the second half, and France quickly looked more dangerous before they eventually found the leveller as Antoine Griezmann moved up to third in all-time Euro scoring.
France had chances to win the match, but Peter Gulacsi showed how much difference a top class goalkeeper can make to a lesser fancied nation, denying Mbappe what looked like a late winner.
