Alejandro Garnacho sealed a 2-0 win for Manchester United at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers to put the Red Devils level on points with Newcastle United.
Erik ten Hag’s side dominated the vast majority of the 90 minutes at Old Trafford but often found themselves unable to get the ball past goalkeeper Daniel Bentley who impressed in his Wolves debut first-ever Premier League game.
Anthony Martial eventually opened the scoring when the electric Antony was charging down on goal and unselfishly teed up his teammate instead of shooting, allowing the Frenchman to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
Manchester United’s finishing has been a concern in recent weeks and with Marcus Rashford missing the game through injury, they didn’t look able to secure all three points as the game went on.
Bentley twice did well to get down low to stop shots from Jadon Sancho and later Antony in the second half before the game was won in stoppage time.
As Julen Lopetegui’s team looked to try and get back on level terms, United found more space to break into. In the second minute of stoppage time, the home side broke away with Bruno Fernandes threading in a ball for Garnacho.
The Argentina international was just over ten minutes into his return from injury but he was able to keep his composure to find an extra yard for a shot and then curl the ball in off the post to make it 2-0.
That result puts Manchester United level with Newcastle United on 66 points with Liverpool lurking four points behind. Wolves meanwhile were toothless throughout much of the match and at this point seem to be more focused on next season.
