League One promotion chasers Portsmouth claimed a dramatic Checkatrade Trophy win against Sunderland last weekend.
Trailing to an Aiden McGeady free-kick, Nathan Thompson's late header took the Wembley showpiece into extra-time. Jamal Lowe's fabulous chip put Pompey in the driving seat in the additional period, but that man McGeady rose to the big occasion a second time to take the tie to a penalty shoot-out. Keeper Craig MacGillivray put the Blues in pole position by saving Lee Cattermole's spot-kick, and striker Oliver Hawkins made no mistake with the decisive penalty to delight the hordes of Pompey fans who had travelled to London.
Although they have fallen away a little in League One since the turn of the year, Kenny Jackett's side have shone for the majority of the 2018/19 season. In fact, across all domestic competitions, only Manchester City (34 wins, 116 goals) have won more games or scored more goals than Pompey (31 wins, 94 goals) this season.
Next up for Portsmouth is a tricky away fixture at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday - Pompey knowing they need a League One win to put pressure on second-placed Barnsley, who are currently five points ahead of the third-placed South Coast club.
