Wolves knock Liverpool out of FA Cup

Premier League leaders Liverpool paid the price for fielding a weakened side as they were knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes from the defeat at Manchester City, including handing debuts to youngsters Rafael Camacho and Curtis Jones while 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever made his bow after just five minutes when Dejan Lovren went off with a hamstring problem.

The Merseysiders fell behind to a Raul Jimenez goal on the break in the 38th minute, the Mexican firing home confidently after Diogo Jota robbed James Milner.

Liverpool improved marginally in the second half and equalised through the hitherto anonymous Divock Origi when a loose ball fell to him on the edge of the area.

But Wolves grabbed the winner four minutes later when Ruben Neves struck a superb low drive from 30 yards out.

Nuno Espirito Santo: "We had good counter-attacks and when we had possession we had possession. It was a very good performance. In the first half we were very good and in the second half we got the reaction we wanted when we lost a goal almost immediately. In general, I think it was a very good game."

Jurgen Klopp: "I changed a lot because we have to, not because I wanted to. After the City game we had immediately a few players who were ill with a sore throat. Pretty much all the players who weren’t here today had little problems."
