The World Cup in Russia is officially over - and as champions France cruise into the sunset with the Jules Rimet trophy, it's time to take a quick look at some of the tournament's most impressive statistics.

Over the month-long festival of football, there were a total of 64 matches, with the ball hitting the back of the net 169 times - two less than in Brazil 2014. There may have been less goals than in the previous World Cup, but there was entertainment aplenty: with some memorable goal-laden games, the mantle of highest-scoring game being shared three ways (Belgium vs Tunisia (5x2), England vs Panama (6x1) and France vs Argentina (4x3).

Those paying attention would have noticed a lot of penalty-kicks - a new record of 29 converted spot-kicks set in Russia; this World Cup also going down in the history books for the number of own goals scored (12).

In 2022, the tournament heads to the Middle East and Qatar, where the tournament will be played in winter for the first time in its history - from November 21 to December 18.
